Just
Trying to Maintain
Using my practice as an indicator regarding advances in health
care, it is obvious to me that we are losing the battle of the
bulge. Healthy People 2010, the Surgeon General’s Report,
suggests that Americans should exercise regularly and aim to
encourage others to participate in physical activities daily,
but we are failing in that effort too. Sometimes the medical
profession is ready to move in one direction and people simply
aren’t, even if it is in their best interest. Obesity
is a perfect example. Some medical experts suggest that people
should aim to maintain this year’s weight throughout 2008.
While some agree this is the correct approach to combating obesity,
I think otherwise. Maybe it’s the “old school”
in me, but I am going to continue advocating weight reduction
every chance I get. If losing weight cannot happen for some
patients I will expect the next best thing which is maintaining
and not getting heavier. Second best is not good enough for
me, but it may be the reality for many patients.
