You
may not believe it but the mouth is the gateway to good health.
The dental professional has always recognized this and as a
physician, I completely agree. A lot of diseases start in the
mouth and some of them can be deadly. Cancer can start in the
mouth and the medical profession has long recognized that diabetic
control cannot take place if one has severe gum disease. Research
also has shown that bad oral decay indicates heart disease may
be on the horizon. Many African American children also endure
health problems that result from an unhealthy mouth. These children
suffer because their parents lack knowledge about good dental
heath, can't afford dental care, or are more concerned with
other health issues.
Tooth loss is associated with a high rate of infection of the
arteries that goes to the heart, as well as the brain, and can
lead to a "heart attack" or a "brain attack."
Periodontal (gum disease) and heart disease can lead to bad
health outcomes, so see your dentist for an evaluation. Brush
and floss your teeth at least twice a day and make sure your
children get dental evaluations. I am not a dentist, but I,
too, look into the mouth when examining a patient. I am Dr.
Thaddeus John Bell--- Closing the gap in health care.
