That's What Friends Are For
The other day as I was reading a poster on stroke and an African
American female I did not know started to tell me about all
of the woes that cause Black people to die early. First, she
told me how most Black folk eat themselves to death and how
many of her friends did not take their medications properly.
Then she went on to say that she had several medical problems
that required her to take pills many times a day. Her afternoon
medications were a challenge for her because she could not remember
to take them. She was also taking care of her elderly mother.
When I asked her how she dealt with forgetting the afternoon
medications, she answered that one of her best friends calls
her every day around the same time and the first question she
asks is “Did you take your medication this afternoon?”
The woman said her friend was someone she can depend on. I said,
“Hey, that's what good friends are for!” I am Dr.
