The State of the Prostate
III of IV
There are far too many African American men who know very little about the prostate gland. Here are a few facts that you should know that may save your life:
1. The Prostatic Specific Antigen, known as the PSA test, and the Digital Rectal Exam (DRE), should be done annually to screen for prostate cancer. It is controversial as to whether the annual PSA and DRE save lives. Research, however, shows that African American men are less likely to get a PSA screen and when they do, are less likely to get the appropriate follow-up treatment. African American men are more likely to have advanced disease because of the lack of follow-up care.
2. Many African American men don’t know their relative or family medical history. Not knowing that risk factor is very dangerous. Being African American puts you at risk.
3. Age is a major risk factor. Don’t wait until your 50’s! Early detection may save your life.
4. A high fat diet is another possible risk factor and bad for you in general. Pay attention to your diet. Try a low fat diet---it won’t hurt and it may help. There is some research that shows that obesity is a risk factor for prostate cancer.
5. As more African American men are involved in clinical trials regarding prostate cancer, the effects and treatment will be better understood in the African American community.
If you are not sure about the state of your prostate, talk to a physician that you trust then play a role in making the decision that is best for you. Take care of yourself. I am Dr. Thaddeus J. Bell---Closing the Gap in Health Care.
