This
week I am writing about my reflections on living. Soon, I will
be celebrating another birthday and I am blessed. Birthdays
are a time to reflect on what life has taught us, what we can
do to help others, and how we can improve ourselves in the time
we have left. As a physician, I feel I have a unique and special
perspective about living because I watch and relate to others,
as they have grown older. I am often asked by patients why have
they developed a particular medical problem that they have never
had before. My answer is that they have never been at this point
in life before. It is called ageing.
On a lighter note, I have noticed my own ageing. The other day
I had to go back in the house at least three times to get all
sorts of things, my medicine included. I had to laugh at myself
because I remember my parents, older friends, and older patients
telling me when they experienced these things. I think often
of my father and how he became more spiritual as he aged. Like
him, I too have become more spiritual and have become totally
accepting of the belief that all life is controlled by a wonderful
being who is God. When your birthday comes around, I hope that
you will take some time to reflect on living. I am Dr. Thaddeus
John Bell--- Closing the Gap in Health Care.
