You Really Should Quit Smoking

By now you should be enjoying not having to breathe smoke in public places and should really notice the difference while eating in restaurants. Folks I have talked with feel that the benefits of the smoking ban far outweigh the profits that were generated before the ban was enacted. I am impressed with the increase in the number of families with children that I now see enjoying meals together in restaurants where smoking is banned. Unfortunately, even with the anti-smoking ordinances, we still have too many African Americans who continue to smoke.

Recently it was again validated that people who have been successful at quitting smoking are those who are highly motivated to stop. There are new medications that work, but most people stop taking them and eventually resume the habit. The treatment of choice for women is hypnotherapy, which has been found to be as effective as other methods. Men, on the other hand, are prone to try quitting cold turkey and in my experience with patients, they fail 99.9% of the time.

As long as we as a people continue smoking, our death rate for heart disease, cancer, and stroke will out pace our white brothers and sisters. If you smoke, you really should stop.
