Noncompliance is a major issue in medicine and its causes are
well documented. Patients are noncompliant because they lack
either funds or insurance, have insufficient medical information,
don’t have transportation for follow-up visits, or have
a lack of trust in their medical provider. I have come to realize
that if the doctor takes the time to communicate with the patient
and establish a good relationship, the patient is more likely
to be compliant in his or her care. Not all patients will show
this positive attribute, but when it happens it is good for
the patient and the doctor and it helps to reduce the cost of
medical care. As I learned in my mamma’s house, good communication
and establishing a personal relationship prove to be a good
thing.
