The Health Care Team (Preventive Health)
The team approach has always intrigued me. As a member of
a state championship football team and several world class
sprint relay teams, I was impressed by effective teamwork
and what it can accomplish. As a physician, I have worked
with great teams at MUSC and of course in my private practice
where I learned firsthand that the physician is very dependent
upon others to make the team work.
The medical profession is large, yet African Americans and
other minorities are under represented. Research and experience
suggest that the more diverse the health care team, the more
likely disparities in health care will diminish. More African
Americans and other minorities entering careers as health
administrators, dentists, pharmacists, medical researchers,
nurses, physical therapists, dietitians, and physicians would
go a long way to improve the health care of the diverse population
we live amongst. My hat goes off to diverse health care teams.
