A common problem today is that African American fathers
don't talk to their children about health. Notice, I
said fathers and not "baby daddy" a term that
is far too common in our community. I continue to be
amazed at the number of folks who have never talked
with their parents about their health.
As
Father's Day approaches, I want to encourage all fathers
to talk to your children about your family's health.
Plant the seed when they are young that health is important.
Help them understand that an unhealthy lifestyle contributes
to bad health. Make sure your own lifestyle sets a good
example for your children. Remember, most young people
will do as daddy does, not necessarily as he says. Now
if you are a "baby daddy" kind of fellow,
and not a real father, then you probably aren't going
to be able to follow this advice. I am Dr. Thaddeus
John Bell--- Closing the gap in health care.
