“Dignity
and respect” the medical profession could use more of
it.
Lots of folk talk
about dignity and respect but I submit that few people know
what it means. It means recognizing and appreciating that people
are different and celebrating their differences. In medicine
this recognition is all too important and can easily be spotted
if it is not adhere to. Studies show that when minorities in
particular are treated with dignity and respect compliance seem
to improve significantly. I have seen this in my own diversity
experience. It is interesting but it seems to be a no brainier
to me that such would be the case. The medical profession has
documented that when physician treat patients with dignity and
respect and establish a real relationship with the patient outcomes
are significantly improved. It works most of the time. Preventive
care still leaves something to be desire but that where education
plays a significant role. Compliance continues to be a major
issue in the health profession perhaps a pinch of dignity and
respect would help. 9/30/05
